Re-design an out-of-stock furniture piece

In this 3-weeks workshop, we’ll meet once a week to study the design of the classic ‘Gimmick’ vinyl console and recreate it using oak-veneered MDF, blending craftsmanship with creative redesign.

Join us for a hands-on furniture design and making workshop inspired by the ‘Gimmick’ vinyl console from Maisons du Monde. This beautiful piece, originally made from teak, will serve as the foundation for our exploration in design, construction, and material adaptation.

Together, we will:

  • Week 1
    • Analyse the original design, understand structure, proportions, and joinery

    • Adapt the design for oak-veneered MDF, exploring how material choice affects form and assembly

    • Redesign the key elements: drawers, compartments, and hinged top for a turntable

    • Start preparing pre-cut parts
  • Week 2
    • Discuss finishing techniques suitable for veneer surfaces

    • Combine modern fabrication tools with traditional craftsmanship

    • Assemble parts
  • Week 3
    • Sanding and finishing

This course is ideal for design enthusiasts, woodworkers, or anyone interested in sustainable furniture design. Participants will gain both theoretical insight and hands-on experience in translating an existing piece into a new material and style.

Participation Options:

  • Join as a collaborator to help analyse and build the prototype (€90)

  • Pay a materials fee to create your own redesigned vinyl console to take home (depending on materials, ~€150/200)
