Chair for beginners

In this design-meets-making workshop, we use the Loke chair by Kragelund as a case study in furniture design. Rather than simply reproducing it, we'll analyse what makes it successful, its proportions, ergonomics, construction, joinery, and upholstery, and use those insights to build our own interpretation using the tools and materials available at Doorspace.

Throughout the workshop, we'll explore how thoughtful design can be adapted to different manufacturing methods and more sustainable materials, including responsibly sourced timber, recycled plastics, and cultivated or alternative leather. The goal is not to create an exact replica, but to understand the design process and translate it into a buildable, functional piece of furniture.

The workshop runs over 6 consecutive weeks, with one 2-hour session every Monday from 13:00 to 15:00, starting 2 November.

Session 1, Understanding the Design

We begin by analysing the original chair:

• Study proportions, ergonomics, and overall construction
• Understand how the joints and hinged backrest function
• Break the chair down into buildable components
• Introduce the laser-cut templates used throughout the workshop

Session 2, Preparing the Components

We transform rough timber into furniture parts:

• Learn how rough timber is processed into usable stock
• Saw, plane, and prepare the main components
• Mark out joints and critical dimensions
• Explore how material selection influences strength and appearance

Session 3, Joinery & Dry Assembly

The chair starts taking shape:

• Prepare and refine the joints
• Assemble and test-fit the frame
• Adjust tolerances and alignment
• Learn how small design changes influence stability and comfort

Session 4, Final Assembly

We complete the structural work:

• Glue and clamp the frame
• Refine joints and construction details
• Prepare the chair for finishing
• Discuss traditional and contemporary furniture-making techniques

Session 5, Sanding & Upholstery

Attention shifts to comfort and finishing:

• Sand and prepare all surfaces
• Learn the basics of upholstery
• Prepare and install the seat and backrest using the material of your choice

Session 6, Finishing & Reflection

We complete the chair:

• Apply the chosen finish
• Make final adjustments and quality checks
• Reflect on the design and manufacturing process
• Discuss how the design could be further developed or personalised

Throughout the workshop you will:

• Learn how to analyse and interpret a furniture design
• Translate complex forms into practical, buildable components
• Practice woodworking, joinery, and basic upholstery techniques
• Understand how materials influence structure, ergonomics, and aesthetics
• Experience the complete journey from design analysis to a finished piece of furniture

No prior experience is required, just curiosity and patience. Whether you're a design student, a maker, or simply someone who appreciates well-crafted furniture, this workshop offers a practical introduction to furniture design, craftsmanship, and sustainable making.

Materials

Workshop participation includes the use of all tools, machinery, and unlimited access to the makerspace during the course. Materials are charged separately.

Wood options:

• Walnut: €80

The material for the seat and backrest (fabric, leather, cultivated leather, or another upholstery material) is not included. Participants purchase this separately, allowing everyone to choose a material that matches their own style and budget.

Makerspace Access

Attendance grants participants unlimited access to Doorspace during regular opening hours for the full two-month duration of the course. If you miss a session, you can catch up independently outside workshop hours using the available tools and facilities.
