Safety first
Before using the woodworking machines at Doorspace, every member must complete our Safety Induction Course. During this free 1.5-hour session, you'll learn the essential safety rules, machine operation, and best practices needed to work confidently and safely in the workshop.
Successful completion of the course grants permission to independently use the covered machines during makerspace opening hours.
The Safety Induction Course is a free introductory training for all Doorspace members who wish to use the woodworking machinery. The session lasts approximately 1.5 hours and is mandatory before independent machine use.
The course focuses on safe working practices rather than advanced woodworking techniques. You'll become familiar with each machine, understand the risks involved, and learn how to operate them correctly and responsibly.
During the course you will learn how to safely use:
- Table saw
- Chop saw (mitre saw)
- Router table
- Jointer
- Thickness planer
You'll also cover:
- Workshop safety rules and procedures
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Machine setup and safe operation
- Common hazards and how to avoid them
- Material inspection and safe handling
- Dust extraction and housekeeping
- Emergency procedures
At the end of the induction, you'll be authorised to use these machines independently as part of your Doorspace membership.
